Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
