Each time a major prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked completely that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
- Just some brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
These are often compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers function at the demanding boundary game development, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
